A Very Southern Blueberry Pie – SRC

by Suzanne on July 18, 2011

And by “Southern” I mean South America. Chile, to be exact.  And Calera de Tango, Santiago, Chile to be perfectly precise. Gloria from Canela Kitchen is my Secret Recipe Club (SRC) blogger this month.  She has so many wonderful recipes that choosing was the most work of all with this pie.  Her recipe, Blackberries Pie (Kuchen de Moras) has some metric measurements so my first job was to convert them.   Oh, and I had blueberries already on hand, so therefore we are having a Blueberry Pie instead of Blackberry. But I was very curious.  What was this “Kuchen de Moras”?  Sounds like German and Spanish.  I began to do a little research on  the origin and found that there is a long history of Germans arriving in Chile as early as the 1500s and continued through the 1800s.  So many Chileans are of German decent, thus the use of the word “Kuchen”, which is German for “pie”. I LOVE putting new wrinkles in my brain. I LOVE not having any other new wrinkles anywhere else, thank you very much. My family is coming over for dinner tonight so I’ve made one of our all-time favorites, Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole, Roasted Beets and Carrots with a Balsamic Glaze, Grape Salad, and Blueberry Pie with Homemade Buttermilk FroYo. How’s THAT for a menu? In fact, over this next week I will post each of these for your perusal.  And enjoyment. And, for your bel-lay! So we shall begin at the end and start with dessert.  I’ve always wanted to do that.  And, by the way, I can’t decide which was the best part of this pie . . . the fresh blueberries or the awesome crust!  You don’t want to miss out on this one! Go ahead. . . . I’ll not tell a soul.  Promise.
