Donna’s Mirror

by Suzanne on March 9, 2012

Donna's Mirror

My husband’s cousin, Donna and her husband, David, have been remodeling a house.  They are VERY industrious and creative.  Donna recently turned this grubby gold filigree mirror into THIS stunning masterpiece. I think it is just fabulous and red is my favorite color!  I’m showing this off just for her. She’s a sweetheart.

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

[slideshow] Pumpkin Whoopee Pies adapted from sarahlipoff.com Makes about 20 pies Ingredients for the cookie part: 1 1/2 c Pumpkin Pie Filling or Puree 2 Tbsp Maple Syrup 1 tsp vanilla 1/4 tsp ground Ginger 1 whole egg 1/2 cup Grapeseed Oil 1 cup packed Brown Sugar 1/2 tsp Baking Soda 1/2 tsp Baking Powder Pinch of Salt 1/2 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice 2 cups all-purpose flour Ingredients for the filling: 8 oz Mascarpone Cheese 1/4 cup Powdered Sugar 1/2 tsp Vanilla 1/4 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix the pumpkin, syrup, vanilla, ginger, egg, oil, and brown sugar in a big bow and whisk until everything is smooth and incorporated. Add the salt, baking soda, baking powder and flour and mix together. Heat oven to 350F and line cookie sheets with parchment paper (or grease the pans lightly).  Spoon on batter in 2″ rounds. Place in the oven and bake for about 14 minutes.  When they turn a bit brown and crack a little, they’re done! Let them cool completely before filling!!! Using a knife or pastry bag and swirl on some filling.  Top with another cookie. If the filling seems a little gooey, place pies in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to stiffen the filling. Eat and Enjoy – the pictures are worth 1,000 words. Love these little punkins, Suz You can purchase high-resolution photos of pictures from this blog and other images here. They make great kitchen decor and gifts. Also, the notecards are great for sharing recipes! More added every week. Thru The Bugs On My Windshield by V. Pillows

by Suzanne on September 10, 2011

My grandmother (Mimi’s mom – the very crafty one) used to spend hours making pillows exactly like this.  I can remember she generally made them out of ultrasoft, light-weight corduroy and I loved to touch them and lay my head on them.  Except for that big button thing in the middle. That was usually my job. To sew on the big buttons. They were all soooooo perfect it amazes me.  And, even as a little bitty girl, I was amazed by the precision of each one.  There was a dark maroon one that was my favorite.  Red IS my color. I will be grateful forever for that love for arts and crafts “gene”.  I just wish I were that patient and precise. Woolie Handmade Diaper Cover: FluffaBebe

FluffaBebe and Thru the Bugs on My Windshield are the sole sponsors of this giveaway. Legal mumbo-jumbo. Oh, and Malabrigo is not a sponsor and no one at FluffaBebe or Thru the Bugs on My Windshield have been compensated in any way shape or form from Malabrigo.  Dang it! There are times when the gift of a hand-knit garment says only, “Thanks, but you shouldn’t have. . .” Luckily, this is not one of those times!  If you have come to Thru the Bugs on My Windshield to receive the gift of hand-crafted bootyliciousness, you are in the right place.  If you have come for the food and adventure, enter the giveaway anyway. Tortellini Primavera (SRC Special)

by Suzanne on August 17, 2011

DSC_0385A (800x536)

It is wonderfully amazing to be a part of people coming together who don’t even really know each other to support one of their own!  In this instance there are a dozen or so bloggers getting together to blog about one of our fellow bloggers who was kinda left hanging.  The person who was assigned her blog backed out on reveal day leaving her an orphan of the reveal.  So, in order to show our support of “Connor’s Cooking” there are several of us that have put together a post using one of Connor’s recipes that we chose to make. It’s just what we do.  Rally to help out a friend. No, there is no major tragedy involved here.  Just good old-fashioned friendship. It seems that more and more people are becoming secluded in their own world.  We try to socialize our dogs, but forget about ourselves.  Companionship and friendship are sooooo underrated.  We feel better about ourselves when we care about others. It’s a fact. Nurturing friendships isn’t always easy.  It’s really no different than working to make and keep your marriage going strong.  Regardless of how often, or not, they call you or drop in to say “have a good day”, it isn’t a one-way street.  YOU have to make a selfless effort to keep it going.  Communicate, reach out and touch someone, call them for no reason at all, just check in and say hello is as important as a good night’s sleep.   And THAT is important. Such is this group called the Secret Recipe Club.  It’s not all that old, but we are all tied to each other by one big important element in our lives . . . FOOD! Of course, food isn’t really what it is ALL about.  Families gather at special holidays for that big turkey, homemade caramel apples, a favorite birthday cake, and potluck family reunions.  It’s really all about family. So here is my contribution to my SRC family and to Connor’s Cooking.  The choices were many, but this “Tortellini Primavera” really grabbed me.  Not to mention I had most of the ingredients on hand.  And I didn’t just make this, I ATE this and had to make myself stop eating. Then I took two more bites. THEN I stopped eating. WOW, this is GREAT! Quick, simple, and can be made with real butter or margarine, heavy cream or skim [...]

Or, maybe this will be a triple play. . . Keep reading and find out! I LOVE baseball! And whether they are winning or not, I am a big fan of the Texas Rangers. I also LOVE sweet stuff, although I don’t make or buy much of it. Probably because I know myself way too well. I’d eat it! I do heart Jolly Ranchers and Sour Patch Kids. Oh, and gum balls! I’m sure I will have my own gumball machine and an endless supply of gum balls in Heaven. And when I do make a dessert, generally it involves fruit. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, apples, mangos, . . . well, you get the idea. My grandmother (mom’s mom) lived just down the street from us and I would stay with her after school. I was probably about six years old when, one day, Mom came to get me and the minute she saw me she was ready to take me to the doctor. I looked like the perfect specimen of jaundice. Well, after talking about it, I ‘fessed up and told them that I had eaten about 10 oranges that afternoon. BIG oranges. Yep, color me orange. My taste buds do lean toward the savory side like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Chips and salsa are their own food group. My favorite afternoon snack is a Bloody Mary – spicy – and most of the time it has no hooch. “Most” of the time. There are times when the hooch spills into the Bloody Mary totally on accident. But I hate wasting good tomato juice, so I manage to drink it. Like this Spicy Bloody Mary. All of this to say that for this month’s Secret Recipe Club I had the honor and pleasure to have two secret recipe blogs to drool over. And it wasn’t easy to pick just one to make from each of them – although with my persistent procrastination, one recipe from each was really all I had time for. Oh, by the way, if’n you want to join in the fun, click on this link and sign up to be a part of the Secret Recipe Club! The more the merrier! The first recipe is from Gloria who lives in Calera de Tango, Santiago, Chile. She has so many fabulous recipes, both in English and in Spanish! Check out her blog at Canela Kitchen. Here’s [...]
