My grandmother (Mimi’s mom – the very crafty one) used to spend hours making pillows exactly like this. I can remember she generally made them out of ultrasoft, light-weight corduroy and I loved to touch them and lay my head on them. Except for that big button thing in the middle.
That was usually my job.
To sew on the big buttons.
They were all soooooo perfect it amazes me. And, even as a little bitty girl, I was amazed by the precision of each one. There was a dark maroon one that was my favorite. Red IS my color.
I will be grateful forever for that love for arts and crafts “gene”. I just wish I were that patient and precise.

Thanks for the wonderful post, your picture of your sweet grandma, and the memories you jogged in my own mind.
Thank you, Schmidty. She was one-of-a-kind and taught me so much about crafts, embroidery, flowers, growing a garden and ironing sheets. I’ll never forget.
You iron your sheets?
You’re WAY better than me.
Great post. Beautiful pillows. Grandmas are the best! “No cake”, I hear my grandma say in my mind all the time when my kids won’t eat their dinner. My grandma would always say in the cutest, sweet little voice if we weren’t eating the dinner she’d prepare “no cake”. Can’t wait to see her again someday and meet for the first time my mom’s mom (she died when my mom was only 2).
No I don’t iron my sheets. But Grandma did. Everyone used to. First you dry them on the line, then you bring the in and sprinkle with water and put them in a plastic sack. Then when they are all nice and damp, take them out and iron them with a little spray starch. I was doing this with pillow cases from the time I was 5 years old. I’m with you, looking forward to a nice big reunion.
Such a sweet post Suzanne. I love to hear memories from others. And I love that you included a sweet photo of grammy!
Thanks, she really was sweet. We spent a lot of time together. She kept me lots of times before I began school. Then I used to walk to her house from elementary school. She lived about 2 blocks from us. I still believe that pansies have cute little “faces”. There was never a spring she didn’t have pansies in her front flower bed. Snapdragons in the back. Granddaddy taught me how to make the “dragons snap”.
Beautiful pillows, beautiful memories! My mom and aunts showed me to sew, I have lots of great memories that I’ll never forget. You are very lucky !
Thank you, Mari! Lucky and grateful for what I’ve been given, for sure.
Very sweet. On an unrelated note, that is QUITE a lamp she had. Makes me want to swing dance.
You have always been a “retro” kinda girl.
Thank you–this reminds me of my Grandma Atwell–she was always crocheting things for my sister and me. she also taught us about cool whip and making soup out of a bowl of ice cream…..
